Yes- you read that correctly. A do it yourself chicken coop for UNDER $70.
The first thing we did was hit up our second home... Home Depot (I have been to Home Depot more in the last 6 months than a normal person should in their lifetime).
Anyways... we went to Home Depot and bought ten 2 in.x 2 in.x 8ft. ($2.09 a board)
We knew we wanted the coop to be 4ft x 4ft x 8ft. We used our saw to cut some of the boards in half. Then started to build the frame. We did two 4ft x 8ft frames first.
Then we brought them outside and started to build the rest of the frame.
We ended up adding another board in the middle on both sides and the top for more support and to have something to connect the chicken wire to.
I was only able to find a 2ft by 50ft rolls of chicken wire. The 4ft would have been ideal but I ended up just buying two of the 2ft. I used wire cutters (at least I think that is what they are). The rolls were $16.00 a piece from Walmart. Home Depot had some wire, but I knew Walmart would be cheaper.
Lumber: $25-30
We borrowed an electric staple gun from a friend to secure the wire to the boards. I started at the bottom, then went up and over the top, and down to the other side. Then for the other sides we just cut what we needed to cover the gap. We used the wire that was wrapped around the chicken wire to keep it closed as twist ties to connect the chicken wire together (sorry if that is confusing).
For the nesting area and shelter, I found a dog house on Craigslist for FREE. I was amazed how durable and sturdy (and HEAVY) the dog house was. The fact it was free was even better. The roof comes off too so I can reach in to get eggs when my chickens start laying.
The finished product!
Lumber: $25-30
Chicken Wire: $32
Nesting house: FREE
GRAND TOTAL---- $62.00
